Partial Knee Replacement
What are the different types of partial knee replacement?
There are three types of partial knee replacement. Medial partial knee replacement replaces the inside compartment of the knee; this is the most common type of partial knee replacement. Lateral partial knee replacement replaces the cartilage on the femur and tibia in the outside part of the knee. Lastly, patellofemoral joint replacement replaces the knee cap and the groove on the femur that touches the knee cap.
What is the difference between total knee replacement and partial knee replacement?
In a total knee replacement, the entire joint surface of the femur and tibia are resurfaced with a metal implant. In some cases, the patella (knee cap) is also resurfaced. In a partial knee replacement, only the medial (inside), lateral (outside), or the patellofemoral (knee cap) compartment are resurfaced. The basic concept is to maintain as much normal anatomy as possible and only treat the affected compartment of the knee.
Who is a candidate for partial knee replacement?
Dr. Kelly performs a thorough evaluation on each patient to identify the best possible treatment options. The ideal candidate for partial knee replacement has severe arthritis in only one part of the knee, and still has a full range of motion of the joint.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of partial knee replacement?
Partial knee replacement maintains all the ligaments of the knee so the knee functions more similarly to a normal knee. Additionally, it is a less invasive procedure with reduced risk of infection and stiffness compared to total knee replacement. However, it is possible that the other areas of the knee will degenerate over time and develop arthritis. In those cases, a partial knee replacement can be converted to a total knee replacement.
Do all joint replacement surgeons perform partial knee replacement?
No. It is very important to ask your surgeon if he or she performs partial knee replacement. Dr. Kelly completed additional specialized training in complex knee replacement and is an expert in the field of partial knee replacement. He is one of few surgeons that can offer each type of partial knee replacement. He works together with his patients to develop a personalized plan for treatment based on each patient’s condition.
